The printing on the dress is a collage of oil painting 'Spain pays homage to Religion and to the Church' by Corrado Giaquinto, a 18th-century painter in the service of the Spanish royal family. The artwork was painted in 1759 and is now in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.
Corrado Giaquinto was born in Italy in 1703 and is considered one of the greatest representatives of Roman Rococo painting in the first half of the 18th century. Corrado produced numerous oil paintings and frescoes in churches throughout Italy and Spain. He also designed the stucco and sculptures in the Spanish royal palace. In 1753 he was invited to the court by Spanish King Ferdinand VI and appointed as a court painter. From then on he produced religious paintings such as The Birth of the Sun and the Triumph of Bacchus and Spain pays homage to Religion and to the Church, which we used in the printing design.
Spanish monarchy and the glory of Catholicism
The work 'Spain pays homage to Religion and to the Church' expresses the Spanish monarchy at the time and its virtues, as well as the respect for religion and the Catholic Church.So the figures depicted in the painting and their belongings all contain different meanings.
The picture is divided into two parts by clouds.The upper part is the Spanish and Catholic world. Three women and a dove are depicted around an altar in the centre. The dove shining just above the altar is the "Holy Spirit"; to the left a woman trying to receive a papal tiara from an angel is the "Catholic Church"; to the right is "Religion", wearing a white cape and holding a cross in her hand; to the bottom right is "Spain", a woman in warrior's clothing, about to offer an wheat to the two above. The representation of 'Spain' as a woman wearing Roman-style clothing and armour was very popular in 17th century painting and sculpture, in order to portray the belligerent aspect of the people in spain.
And the angel blowing a trumpet at the bottom of the picture represents the meaning of spreading the glory of the Catholic Church to the world and celebrating the triumph and virtues of the Spanish monarchy.
