Tanlented Utagawa Kuniyoshi

In the design of the dress we used the work of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, an Ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period. Utagawa Kuniyoshi grew up in Edo , and he was recognised for his talent at the age of 12 by Utagawa Toyokuni who was a popular painter of the time, and became his pupil.

It was at the age of thirty that such a talented Utagawa Kuniyoshi came to prominence. At that time, he painted a series of works based on the Chinese novel Water Margin, entitled "The Hundred and Eight Heroes of Water Margin". The heroic figures and stunningly vibrant colours of the characters in the paintings caused a sensation in Edo, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi was thus dubbed 'The Kuniyoshi of Samurai painting'. He subsequently made his mark on the field of ukiyo-e by painting many paintings of heroes in tales of the East and West, beauty paintings and landscapes that incorporated the light and shade relations from the West.

The great cat lover,Kuniyoshi

Kuniyoshi, who became famous for his paintings of imposing samurai, was actually a very funny person. It is said that he was very fond of watching the scene of bustle , for example fire and fight scenes. And he always dressed casually, like the manual laborers of the time. This quirky, casual side of him is well reflected in his shadow paintings and caricatures.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi was also an uncompromising cat lover. According to records, he often had more than a dozen cats in his house . Even when he was painting, he would hold a kitten in his arms. This scene was also recorded by his student Kawanabe Gyosai. There are many other anecdotes about Utagawa Kuniyoshi and his cat. It is said that once his cat ran away from home, he rushed to gather his students together to look for it, but to no avail, which made him very sad. Kuniyoshi's love of cats was deeply ingrained in his paintings. He often made anthropomorphic representations of cute cats, painted many expressive and storytelling images of cats.

The joyful, uninhibited style, sometimes with a touch of humor, and the love for cats that you can gradually feel, are all part of Utagawa Kuniyoshi 's charm. Such works also give a deep sense of how much he enjoys living. Only someone who loves life and truly enjoys living is able to depict things that make people's hearts dance and entertain them with his unique perspective.
